Plaque is the enemy of your mouth. Gums are the foundation of your teeth and can't return once they recede. Simple oral hygiene, scaling and polishing can keep your gums in prime condition because prevention is better than cure. Therefore good oral hygiene is taught and encouraged at the clinic. Bring your tooth brush, floss, interdental brushes and aids, or whatever you use with you to your checkups and your dentist will show you what is good and what is not.
Smoking, poor oral hygiene, inherited factors and neglect can damage gums. If you have periodontitis (gum disease) you may start to have mobile teeth, look "long in the tooth", have bleeding gums or suffer from bad breath. Fortunately a wide variety of gum treatments are available to treat this and stop matters getting worse.
