When I started my dental training, my experience of the dentist had been a fairly sheltered one consisting of a ride in the chair and a quick check-up, followed by some pink mouth wash.

This isn't how everyone sees it however. The patients I began to see varied greatly, but many sported yellow and brown stumps, which got fewer or progressively more full of black fillings, dentures, crowns and bridges as the years rolled by. Toothache and dreaded abscesses were quite common and this faithfully brought patients to the surgery if they hadn't got round to it earlier. The inevitable truth seemed to be that the future for dental patients was more problems and unsightly teeth with age. The majority of us have been brought up on NHS dentistry, which hasn't been designed for preventive or cosmetic work.

I began to ask why our treatments made things worse or more ugly? We now have fluoride, better oral hygiene and newer technology, so things are definitely getting better. Our politicians tell us that the nation's teeth have never been better, but what about those who seem to have missed out on the good news?

Technology in the past 10 years has helped all areas of life, but in dentistry things have massively improved. Tooth coloured fillings, crowns and bridges are now as good as the old metallic versions. Computer CAD-CAM technology guarentees beautiful, great fitting and strong restorations. Whitening will safely take years off teeth in no time. Crowded teeth can be straightened in just a matter of weeks. It is now possible to actually screw-in teeth in minutes, because dental implants have improved both in quality and with much quicker treatment times. A few years ago cosmetic treatments did real harm to sound teeth, requiring drilling or worse, but this is no longer the case. Even better news is that this new technology needen't cost any more than the older methods, often less due to the improved efficiency resulting in decreased treatment times. So dentistry has an exciting future and Always Smiling is embracing the future now.
